In the late 1990s, a strange New Age belief called "breatharianism" entered the media spotlight when a guru named Jasmuheen declared that humans didn't need food or water to survive.

Instead, she insisted that people only needed "pranic light" — which could conveniently be absorbed from the air.

Though most scoffed at this bizarre and extremely dangerous practice, some chose to follow Jasmuheen's teachings. And a few of these followers met an untimely demise while doing so, yes they died. At least five deaths have been linked to breatharianism throughout the years, including one 49-year-old who died with Jasmuheen's book "Living on Light" right by her side. But despite these tragic deaths — and the fact that many so-called breatharians have been caught eating food in public places — the controversial practice of breatharianism still commands a fringe following to this day.
