The most recent volcanoes on Mars were surprisingly active Mars is famous for its towering volcanoes. And a new study says the most recent volcanic activity on Mars, occurring within the last few hundred million years, was far more complex and dynamic than once thought. The researchers combined detailed maps of the volcano Pavonis Mons – the 4th largest on Mars – with mineral data captured from orbit. By doing so, they were able to trace the volcanic history in this area. They discovered that, in its active period, Pavonis Mons didn't simply undergo single, short eruptions. Instead, it was fueled by long-lived, complex magma systems that made the volcano evolve over time. Find out more.
