GEOART: Creating Beauty With the Earth

One of the simplest ways to reconnect with Nature is to make something beautiful with what the Earth has already placed around us.

This is what I mean by GEOART.

GEOART can be very small. You do not need special art materials, training, or even very much time. You might take a walk near your home and notice fallen leaves, stones, flower petals, shells, pinecones, grasses, pieces of bark or branches. Then, using what is naturally available, arrange these things into a pattern or design.

A spiral.

A circle.

A star.

A flower.

A symbol.

A little creature.

A mandala.

Or simply a pattern that feels beautiful to you.

Then pause for a moment and create a blessing, thought, prayer, poem, or message to go with it.

Take a photograph.

And share it with us here on ElvenWorld.

Art That Belongs to the Earth

The idea of making art directly from natural materials has a long history, although today it is often called Land Art, Earth Art, environmental art, or ephemeral nature art.

Artists have created works from stones, leaves, flowers, sand, snow, branches, seeds, shells and many other things found in the landscape. Some pieces are enormous, but many are wonderfully small and intimate.

Artist Andy Goldsworthy, for example, is well known for arranging leaves, stones, flowers, ice, sticks and other natural materials into temporary works of art. The artwork is often photographed and then allowed to return naturally to the landscape.

Other artists create pictures and patterns from flower petals, seeds, leaves and twigs. Some photograph their creations and then return the materials to the garden or simply allow wind and weather to change them.

That is one of the things I especially love about this kind of art.

It does not have to last.

We create something beautiful, appreciate it, photograph it if we wish, and then allow Nature to continue her work.

Stone, Sand, Leaves and Flowers

Stone balancing is another beautiful example. Stones can be carefully arranged or balanced into temporary sculptures, sometimes forming unexpected shapes and patterns.

At the ocean, artists work with an entirely different canvas.

Earthscape artist Andres Amador creates enormous geometric designs directly in beach sand with a rake. His designs interact with the shape of the beach and are eventually washed away by the incoming tide. For him, the act of creating is an important part of the artwork itself.

And GEOART does not have to be enormous.

A recent sustainable Earth-art project demonstrated something much closer to what we can do ourselves: gathering natural materials near the landscape, arranging leaves and stones temporarily, and allowing those materials to return to the Earth afterward. The artist describes the process as a kind of meditative collaboration with the ecosystem.

Even a handful of leaves arranged beneath a tree can become GEOART.

Aligning With Earth's Design

When you look closely at Nature, you begin to see that the Earth is already an extraordinary artist.

There are spirals in shells.

Branching patterns in trees.

Symmetry in flowers.

Ripples in water.

Patterns in stones.

Curves in rivers.

Cycles in the Moon and seasons.

We are surrounded by design.

So perhaps GEOART is less about imposing our own design upon Nature and more about listening to the designs that are already there.

At ElvenWorld, I would like us to explore GEOART as a way of aligning ourselves with the beauty, rhythm and vibration of the living Earth.

Our community already celebrates nature, storytelling, poetry, mythology, creativity and meaningful connection. GEOART gives us another very simple way to bring these things together.

You might go outside asking:

What beauty is here today?

What pattern wants to be made?

What does this place inspire me to say?

Then create.

Add a Blessing

Once you have made your GEOART, write a few words to accompany it.

It does not need to be complicated.

Perhaps:

May all who walk this Earth remember they belong to her.
May beauty arise beneath our feet,
and peace grow wherever we stand.

Or simply:

Blessings to the trees, the waters,
the creatures
and all who share this place.

Your blessing might be serious, joyful, mystical, playful or poetic.

It is yours.

Our ElvenWorld GEOART Invitation

I would love for members of ElvenWorld around the world to begin creating these little offerings of beauty.

Use natural materials respectfully and gently. Whenever possible, use fallen or abundant materials rather than damaging living plants or sensitive habitats. Leave protected places undisturbed.

Then:

1. Find a place in Nature near you.
2. Notice what natural materials are already available.
3. Create a small work of GEOART.
4. Write a blessing, poem or thought to accompany it.
5. Take a photograph.
6. Post your GEOART here on ElvenWorld, and tell us approximately what part of the Earth inspired it.

Imagine what we could create together.

One person arranging stones beside a river.

Another making a flower spiral in a garden.

Someone drawing a great pattern in the sand.

Someone arranging autumn leaves beneath an ancient tree.

Little works of beauty appearing all across the Earth.

Photographed.

Blessed.

Shared.

And then returned to Nature.

That is GEOART.

We are not separate from Earth's beauty. We are participating in it.
