My Restoration Project Of a 18th Century Viola Cello

European - 7/8 Viola Cello

Came to me in a terrible state thought to be of disrepair, with worn lacquer work on back & high arching fret board, also deep scratches, broken strings & missing bridge & broken cat gut sting base connection & dislodged tongue,.. but the bones were all still in tact, I didn't want to take away the natural aged patina of this instrument as its so old, but I think I did a good job, starting with cleaning it then purchasing a new bridge and bow which were missing.. then Re-french polishing it again to bring it back into having another life all over again..

To Then Being Cleaned, Repaired & Re French Polished Again..

Sometimes a restoration can be over done, stripping away all the age & petina from the instrument and it no longer is seen as a old looking antique but a newer reproduction,this has wild variations in grain density, so the interior reflecting surface with variations can be seen up the fret board giving it a tiger stripe look, made of what looks like Cedrela as its actually related to the mahogany family of woods, however, is infinitely softer, and lighter in weight....

I kept as much of its old authenticity as I could while giving it a chance to still be looked at as a 100yr old antique.The plainest of materials however can have spectacular tonal qualities, and are famous for their very fine tone...The resonance and ringing qualities of this wood however are fantastic...and even be superior to highly figured woods.
