Greek philosopher Plato wrote about Atlantis 2,600 years ago, describing it as "an island situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Hercules," as the Straits of Gibraltar were known in antiquity.
The Atlanteans were a highly advanced civilization for their time, with incredible knowledge of science, architecture, and the arts. They lived in peace and prosperity for centuries, enjoying the bounties of their land and the bounty of the sea that surrounded them.
However, as the years passed, the Atlanteans grew complacent and arrogant. They became convinced that they were invincible, that nothing could ever threaten their existence. And so, they turned their attention to darker pursuits, dabbling in forbidden sciences and delving into the mysteries of the universe.
Their hubris would prove to be their undoing. One day, a catastrophic event occurred that would change the course of history forever. Some say it was a volcanic eruption that caused the city to sink beneath the waves. Others say it was an earthquake or a great flood.
Whatever the cause, the end result was the same: Atlantis was lost forever. Its people scattered to the winds, their knowledge and technology lost to the ages. And yet, even now, the legend of Atlantis lives on, a testament to the greatness that once was, and a warning of the dangers of pride and arrogance.

Morell...that's odd because my grandmother had that set. She was from the Azores--Sao Miguel. Apparently my maternal ancestral lineage speaks of being all that remains of fair Numenor. I mean Atlantis. It's a beautiful cream and sugar set, just the same!
